October 16-22 was DesignPhiladelphia 2008, a week focusing on the importance of design specific to the city of brotherly love. The week-long event had a general theme of sustainability, complete with a small showcase village, A Clean Break, showcasing “innovative design solutions from international architects and designers, addressing issues of urban infill, 21st century development, and sustainability.” Though the exhibition was smaller than expected, I saw some simple and innovative designs that are worth sharing.
Leaning-Molds, designed by Maruja Fuentes from San Juan, Puerto Rico, are a modular, “innovative furniture wall-system” made for leaning, instead of sitting in public spaces. The molds are made of recycled plastic, and are quite extraterrestrially beautiful. Waiting for the bus will never be the same again.
Photovoltaic “leaves” power the LED lights on this innovative bus shelter. I don’t think the lights are necessary, but this technology is so versatile, I’m excited to see what other designs come from SMIT.
miniHome – a sustainable RV, the trailer home of the future!
